Saving stranded marine animals up and down the East Coast
The NMLC's medical mission focuses on the marine animals that are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Ocean Act: marine mammals and turtles.

Specifically, these include dolphins, porpoises, small whales, seals, and sea turtles. Many of these animals belong to species that are on the endangered or threatened species lists.

Evidence appears to show that the numbers of strandings are increasing, especially strandings of single animals.

The causes of strandings are many - and often the reason for any one stranding may remain a mystery.  The theories for why marine animals strand fall into two categories: natural and man-made.
